Highways and utilities

As a highway, transport, bridge or local authority, or a utilities company, it's important you notify us first before digging up the road to avoid causing any damage to our infrastructure that you'll be liable to pay for.

Contact your local Network Alterations Team with details of your proposed excavation and - assuming the relevant legislation is active - we'll investigate whether any alteration work is likely. We'll tell you the results of our investigation (including estimated costs where necessary) and outline what happens next usually within 20 working days.

We can also provide a consultancy service on a chargeable basis, where information is required at the feasibility stage of a project proposal. Information or advice provided by us at an early stage may reduce or avoid costly diversions later on. This normally takes up to 25 working days to complete from the date we receive your order and payment.

For your information, the costings and associated information provided are based on the principles of The New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991. (NRSWA).

Where alterations to BT apparatus are required under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) then BT will make agreements with the relevant Authority for the execution of essential works and the recovery of expenses in accordance with the Act. Where BT apparatus is affected by Major Works as defined under NRSWA then the guiding document for agreements will be the MEASURES NECESSARY WHERE APPARATUS IS AFFECTED BY MAJOR WORKS (DIVERSIONARY WORKS), A Code of Practice.

In other circumstances and under the appropriate legislation, BT will recover all expenses associated with the alterations work required.
